Veterinary Laser Therapy

Veterinary laser therapy, a heavily researched veterinary modality, has been proven to reduce pain and inflammation while accelerating healing and tissue regeneration.

Therapeutic laser is also known by other names such as cold laser or low level laser.  Most recently, the term Photobiomodulation has been coined since it encompasses its true meaning.  Photobiomodulation works by using electromagnetic energy to interact with the cells chemically and biologically. It is also called “cold” laser therapy because the low levels of light aren’t enough to heat your body’s tissue. Photobiomodulation is not painful and well tolerated.  Most patients will relax and sometimes fall alseep during their laser therapy treatment.

Veterinary laser therapy has been used to treat a variety of conditions including:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Lick granuloma
  • Skin/ear infections
  • Wound healing
  • Immunoregulation
  • Improving nerve function/regeneration
  • Releasing painful trigger points
  • Speeding healing of infections

Treatments should be considered in areas of pain or inflammation.  It can be used in conjunction with medicines, acupuncture, or as a stand-alone treatment.  Its use is particularly useful in patients with underlying medical concerns such as in older pets with diminished organ function where  medications can carry a higher risk of side-effects. Treatment sessions usually last about 15 mins, and the number of sessions & frequency will depend on the reason for treatment.
