Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most difficult decisions a family can face. Many pet owners choose in-home euthanasia because it allows their pet to remain comfortable in a familiar environment surrounded by the people who love them most.
At York Mobile Vet, Dr. Patricia Khor provides compassionate mobile veterinary end-of-life care and in-home pet euthanasia services throughout Markham, Richmond Hill, Stouffville, Aurora, Newmarket, Vaughan, Georgina, and surrounding communities. One of the most common questions we hear is: “What happens during an in-home euthanasia appointment?“
Understanding the process can help ease anxiety and allow you to focus on spending meaningful time with your pet.
Why Families Choose In-Home Pet Euthanasia
For many pets, visiting a veterinary clinic can be stressful, especially when they are elderly, anxious, in pain, or have mobility challenges.
Choosing at-home euthanasia for dogs and cats allows your pet to remain where they feel safest and most comfortable. Families often appreciate being able to:
- Avoid stressful car rides and clinic visits
Spend private, uninterrupted time with their pet - Include family members in the goodbye process
- Create a peaceful and personalized environment
- Allow other household pets to say goodbye
- Remain at home afterwards without needing to travel
Many families tell us that choosing a mobile veterinarian for euthanasia provided comfort and peace during a very emotional time.
Before Your Appointment
Once your appointment is scheduled, our team will discuss any questions or concerns you may have. We will also explain the process, aftercare options, and what to expect on the day of the visit.
Some families choose to prepare a favourite resting place for their pet, such as:
- A favourite bed
- A sunny spot by a window
- A couch or family room
- A shaded area in the backyard (weather permitting)
If your pet experiences anxiety or discomfort, we may discuss whether pre-visit calming medications would be beneficial to help them remain relaxed and comfortable.
There is no right or wrong way to prepare. Many families simply spend the day loving their pet and enjoying favourite activities together, even completing a bucket list.
When the Veterinarian Arrives
Dr. Patricia Khor will send you a message when she is on the way, to give you an estimated arrival time. Once Dr. Patricia arrives at your home, she will greet and spend a short time getting to know your pet and family.
This initial conversation allows us to:
- Review your pet’s condition
- Discuss the euthanasia process
- Answer any remaining questions about the visit
- Confirm aftercare arrangements
- Ensure everyone feels comfortable before proceeding
There is never a rush. We understand that this is an important and emotional moment for all of those involved.
The Sedation Process
A key part of our approach to peaceful pet euthanasia at home is providing pain free sedation before the final medication is administered.
Your pet will receive a pain medication to calm the body in a form of an injection. This is given with a tiny needle designed to help them relax and become sleepy.
During this first injection, you may cuddle with your pet and give them some of their favourite snacks.
At this time, your pet may:
- Become drowsy
- Rest comfortably
- Fall into a deep sleep
- Experience relief from pain and anxiety
Many families choose to sit beside their pet, pet them, talk to them, or simply enjoy a quiet moment together.
This stage helps ensure your pet is calm, comfortable, and unaware of any further procedures.
The Final Euthanasia Medication
Once your pet is fully relaxed and sleeping peacefully, the final euthanasia medication is administered.
The medication works quickly and painlessly.
Your pet passes peacefully while asleep and comfortable.
There is no awareness, fear, or suffering.
The process is gentle and dignified, allowing your pet to pass surrounded by familiar sights, sounds, and loved ones.
Memorial Keepsakes
As part of our commitment to compassionate end-of-life care, York Mobile Vet provides:
Ink paw prints (up to five impressions)
Fur clippings placed into a beautiful glass memorial vial
*Custom initial charms may also be available upon request.
These keepsakes are provided at no additional charge and can serve as meaningful reminders of the special bond you shared with your pet.
What Happens Afterwards?
After your pet has passed, we will confirm that their heart has stopped and give your family time to say goodbye.
There is no need to rush.
Many families choose to:
- Sit quietly with their pet
- Share memories
- Take photographs
- Include children in the goodbye process
- Allow other pets in the home to visit and understand what has happened
Every family grieves differently, and we strive to support whatever feels right for you.
*If you have chosen either cremation or aquamation aftercare services, we will help transport your pet to prepare them for your chosen aftercare service.
Pet Aftercare and Cremation Options
Before our visit, we will discuss aftercare arrangements and help you choose the option that feels right for your family.
Options may include:
- Private cremation
- Communal cremation
- Home burial (where legally permitted)
- Memorial products and keepsakes
If desired, we can coordinate cremation services on your behalf and guide you through available memorial options.
Grief Support and Aftercare Resources
At York Mobile Vet, our care does not end when the visit is over. We recognize that pet loss affects every family differently, and we are committed to providing ongoing emotional support during the grieving process.
We offer follow-up grief resources tailored to each family’s needs, including support for:
- Children coping with the loss of a pet
- Single-person households experiencing pet loss and isolation
- Couples and families grieving together
- Multigenerational households with varying emotional needs
- Pet loss in homes with other surviving pets
Upon request, we can provide curated grief support materials, coping strategies, and community-based pet loss resources to help guide you through this time. Our goal is to ensure every family feels supported in a way that reflects their unique situation and emotional needs.
How Do I Know When It’s Time?
This is often the hardest question pet owners face.
Signs that may indicate a declining quality of life include:
- Difficulty standing or walking
- Chronic pain
- Loss of appetite
- Frequent accidents
- Difficulty breathing
- Withdrawal from family interactions
- Loss of interest in favourite activities
If you’re uncertain, Dr. Patricia Khor can help assess your pet’s quality of life and discuss whether hospice care, palliative care, or euthanasia may be appropriate.
We also encourage families to read our blog, “A Day Too Early, Not a Day Too Late”, and watch our YouTube video on “How Do I Know When to Say Goodbye?” decision-making, both of which provide additional guidance during this difficult time.
