Pet In-Home Acupuncture & Laser Therapy
Our In-home acupuncture and laser therapy services provide a gentle, stress-free way to support your pet’s comfort and mobility in the familiar surroundings of home.
Integrative Care in the Comfort of Your Home
At York Mobile Veterinary Services, we believe in a integrative approach to your pet’s health and comfort. Veterinary acupuncture and laser therapy are safe, non-invasive treatments that can be used alongside conventional veterinary medicine to help manage pain, improve mobility, support healing, and enhance quality of life.
These therapies are particularly beneficial for senior pets, pets recovering from injury or surgery, those living with chronic pain, and patients receiving palliative or hospice care.
Veterinary Acupuncture
Understanding Acupuncture
The practice of acupuncture has been used for thousands of years. While its benefits were once largely based on observation and experience, modern medical research has helped us better understand how acupuncture works.
Medical acupuncture is an adaptation of traditional Chinese acupuncture that is grounded in anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience. Research has shown that stimulating specific acupuncture points can affect targeted areas of the body through the nervous system. This stimulation can produce both local effects and broader regulatory effects throughout the body, helping to improve comfort, mobility, and overall function.
Why Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture points, often called “acupoints,” are commonly located where nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and connective tissues interact. During treatment, very fine sterile needles are gently inserted into selected acupuncture points.
Stimulation of these points can:
- Influence how pain signals are transmitted to the spinal cord
- Encourage the release of the body’s natural endorphins
- Reduce pain perception locally and throughout the body
- Improve blood flow and circulation
- Help relax muscles and release painful trigger points
- Support regulation of the immune and nervous systems
Because many disease processes involve inflammation, pain, or chronic stress, acupuncture can help optimize the body’s natural healing mechanisms and support overall well-being.
How Can Acupuncture Help My Pet?
Veterinary acupuncture is used as part of an integrative treatment plan tailored to your pet’s individual needs.
An acupuncture appointment begins with a thorough review of your pet’s medical history, followed by a physical, neurological, and myofascial examination. Based on these findings, a personalized treatment plan is developed. Some patients may receive acupuncture alone, while others may benefit from electroacupuncture, which uses gentle electrical stimulation to enhance treatment effects.
The frequency of treatment varies depending on your pet’s condition. Initial treatments are often recommended every 1–2 weeks to maximize the cumulative benefits of therapy. As improvement occurs, appointments may be spaced farther apart.
Conditions Commonly Treated with Acupuncture
Acupuncture may be beneficial for:
- Osteoarthritis and chronic pain
- Acute injuries and trauma
- Neurological and spinal conditions, including intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)
- Post-operative pain and healing
- Mobility concerns in senior pets
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Liver and kidney disease
- Palliative and hospice care support
- Muscle tension and trigger points
Many pets tolerate acupuncture extremely well, and some even become so relaxed during treatment that they fall asleep.
Therapeutic Laser Therapy
Understanding Laser Therapy
Therapeutic laser therapy, also known as cold laser therapy, low-level laser therapy, or photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with the body’s cells.
The light energy stimulates biological and chemical processes within tissues, helping to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and promote healing.
It is often referred to as “cold” laser therapy because the treatment does not generate heat that could damage tissues. The therapy is painless, non-invasive, and generally very well tolerated by pets.
Many patients find laser therapy relaxing, and treatment sessions are typically completed in approximately 10–15 minutes.
Conditions Commonly Treated with Laser Therapy
Laser therapy may be recommended for:
- Osteoarthritis
- Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)
- Muscle strains and soft tissue injuries
- Lick granulomas
- Skin infections
- Ear infections
- Wound healing
- Post-surgical recovery
- Nerve injuries and nerve regeneration
- Painful trigger points and muscle tension
Laser therapy can be particularly valuable for aging pets or pets with medical conditions where long-term medication use may carry additional risks or side effects.
Laser Therapy at Home
As part of our mobile veterinary services, we provide laser therapy in your pet’s home environment.
Home treatments can be especially beneficial for:
- Senior pets with mobility challenges
- Anxious or fearful pets
- Pets recovering from injury or surgery
- Families seeking convenient ongoing care
Receiving treatment in a familiar environment often allows pets to remain more relaxed and comfortable throughout their appointment.
Is Acupuncture or Laser Therapy Right for My Pet?
Every pet is unique. During your consultation, we will discuss your pet’s medical history, current condition, and goals of care to determine whether acupuncture, laser therapy, or a combination of both may be beneficial.
These therapies are commonly incorporated into pain management plans, mobility support programs, senior pet care, rehabilitation, and palliative or hospice care.
If you’re interested in learning whether integrative therapies could help improve your pet’s comfort and quality of life, we’d be happy to discuss the options available for your companion.
