End of Life and Home Euthanasia

Nurturing Farewells

Saying goodbye to a cherished pet is undoubtedly one of the most heart-wrenching experiences a pet owner can go through. Many will opt for in-home euthanasia as a way to provide your furry friend with a serene and familiar environment during their final moments. It’s also a safe space for the family to gather and grieve openly.  We would like to soften the emotional journey for both you and your beloved companion by providing this guide:

A Gentle Guide to In-Home Pet Euthanasia

  1. Heartfelt Initial Conversations:

Begin this delicate journey with a compassionate conversation with a member of our team. We’ll take the time to discuss your pet’s well-being, address your concerns, and help you emotionally prepare for what lies ahead. Please let us know if there are special accommodations to be considered (eg cultural/religious practices, children or other pets present) during the appointment. We will also discuss aftercare options, such as cremation, respecting your wishes for your pet’s final resting place.

  1. Choosing an Appointment & Paperwork:

The flexibility of in-home euthanasia allows you to curate a peaceful atmosphere for your pet’s farewell so select a time that works best for you and your pet. We do recommend booking an appointment ahead of time so we can help you prepare for this difficult journey.  We understand that sometimes, urgent care is needed so same-day, evening and weekend appointments are available, pending our veterinarian’s availability. After selecting an appointment time, you will receive an email with appointment time confirmation, euthanasia consent and an estimate for the appointment.

  1. Creating a Comforting Space:

Before our arrival, set up a quiet and cozy space for your pet. Gather cherished items like blankets or toys and your pet’s favourite treat to share a special moment.

  1. Arrival of the Veterinarian:

When we arrive, we will begin by explaining the process, addressing any concerns you might have. Our presence is a source of support for both you and your pet during this emotionally challenging time. We will guide you through the procedure, explaining each step.  Feel free to ask questions and share your preferences for the process.

  1. Serene Sedation:

To ensure a peaceful and pain-free experience, the veterinarian will administer a gentle sedative to your pet. This induces relaxation and a tranquil sleep, fostering a serene transition for your beloved companion.

  1. Tender Euthanasia Process:

Once your pet is in a serene state, the veterinarian will administer the euthanasia solution. This injection is painless and allows your pet to drift into a deeper sleep until he/she passes. You may choose to stay with your pet, offering comfort and love until their last breath.

  1. Precious Moments Afterward:

After the euthanasia, the veterinarian will give you time alone with your pet for final goodbyes. If there are other pets who were placed in a separate area during the appointment, this is a good time for them to join the family.

  1. Nurturing the Grieving Process:

Grieving is a unique and personal journey. Take the time you need to mourn your pet’s loss. Seek solace from friends, family, or pet loss support groups to navigate the emotional terrain with gentle understanding.  We have resources to help you during this difficult time.

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
