Information about SARS-CoV-2 is updated on a daily basis, sometimes hourly! In our pet population, there have been reports of dogs and cats which were tested positive for the virus. These animals did live in close proximity to COVID-positive patients. At this time, the number of reported cases are too small for us to make generalizations. It is important to mention that there has NOT been any reported cases of pet-to-human transmission.
Until more is known, please protect yourself and your furry family member by:
- continuing to include your pets in your emergency preparedness planning, including a two-week supply of food and medications
- washing hands often and try to avoid contact with those who are sick
- avoiding handling your pet if anyone is diagnosed with COVID-19 in the home
- notifying your veterinarian if your pet becomes ill, and always follow your vet’s recommendations for preventive care (things like heartworm and flea/tick control, vaccinations, nutrition, and disease management)
